Dear Mrs. Iyengar,
My Child Is 2.3yrs old n survives only on milk with Complan...rarely has biscuits n chips...had vomiting tendency sometime back. What should I give him to tempt his taste buds? I'm really worried..

Dear Ms Sweta,
Let me first thank you for trusting Nutrition Vista for your health solutions. I do understand your anxiety with regard to Shlok who though still a toddler knows his mind alright but it is something all young mothers go through so you really do not have to worry too much, but work on it.

Well with regard to his diet:

Milk alone is recommended only for the 1st 6 months, thereafter, for their optimum growth solids have to be introduced. Complan is probably making his milk too heavy and also very convenient to finish his meal. Children sometimes are too lazy to eat a meal especially when they are at play. So you have to get innovative on how to give him solid food BUT definitely not biscuit & chips.

Let me give you a few suggestions

- New foods should be given slowly, one at time and when children are hungry, not after they have started crying for hunger as they become cranky or when they are full, as then they will refuse anything , either case you will lose the battle.

- In fact you can try by adding new flavors to milk and get him into an experimental mode

- Let the initial foods be runny or watery in consistency, a little thicker than milk so that he finds it familiar.

- Initially they may refuse or even cry to try any new food except milk but gentle coaxing helps. You have to be gentle but firm and he will know you mean what you say and he will slowly give in

- Let him sit with toddlers his age who are on to good eating practices, he will slowly begin to eat as he will want to imitate them or compete with them.

- It's good to first try any cereal food with milk and slowly introduce fruit and vegetable. like bananas, carrots, ripe pureed or stewed apples etc

- Encourage him to eat with the family, he will look at you all as role models. Give him finger foods in a cup to eat on his own, foods like steamed sticks of carrot, potato, beans or even cauliflower .

- When you introduce any new food, watch out for any signs of allergy- like rashes, diarrhea, tummy aches or vomiting. If he had vomiting tendency once he might have had a stomach upset, so try once again when he is healthy. if he throws up once or twice more please consult your pediatrician.

I hope all these suggestions help. Kindly revert to us in case this information has helped or you need us to give you some more suggestions or alternatives, we are always available to help you and your family with any diet & health related problems.

With best wishes
