Hey Men! Do You Want A Long Life, With Good Health & Virilty?In the study, "Exceptional longevity in men" published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 2008, biological and lifestyle factors of 2,357 healthy men of mean age, 72 years were assessed. 41% survived to at least age 90 years. Again, factors like smoking, diabetes, obesity and hypertension were associated with increased risk of mortality while regular exercise was associated with a nearly 30% lower mortality risk.

The lifestyle factors that affect longevity are:

  • Smoking
    Nicotine blocks blood vessels and also causes cancer, heart disease, respiratory illnesses, impotence and fertility problems.
  • Unhealthy diet
    Excess amounts of unhealthy fats, sodium, processed foods, sweet beverages and refined carbs(white bread, white rice, breakfast cereals low in fibre, sugar) combined with inadequate fruits and vegetables, water and large portion sizes are all diet mistakes made by many men.

    A study, “Changes in Diet and Lifestyle and Long-Term Weight Gain in Women and Men” in which 120,877 disease free and non obese U.S. women and men were followed-up and changes in lifestyle factors and their relationship with weight changes were evaluated at 4-year intervals.

    Within each 4-year period, participants gained an average of 3.35 lb. Excess potato chips, potatoes, sugar-sweetened beverages, unprocessed red meats, and processed meats. Inadequate intake of vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts, and yogurt were observed. Physical activity, alcohol, smoking, sleep, and television watching were also independently associated with weight change.

Vidya Yadav ED: A Sign of Heart Disease?
In some cases, ED can be a warning sign of more serious disease. A 2010 study suggests ED is a strong predictor of heart attack, stroke, and death from cardiovascular disease. The researchers say all men diagnosed with ED should be evaluated for cardiovascular disease. This does not mean every man with ED will develop heart disease, or that every man with heart disease has ED, but patients should be aware of the link.

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy To be healthy and to increase our energy levels we need to have a physical activity for 30 - 45 mins per day and do it 5 times in a week at least. Also consume a diet that provides 25- 30 gms of fiber, all necessary vitamins and minerals, has complex carbs, good protein and fats. Smoking and Alcohol should be avoided as they are proved to be detrimental to our health. Last but not the least, consume 10 - 12 glasses of water per day.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Mr Rao, if a person is overweight, as dietitians we always advice a diet where we lower the calories but not the other nutrients. However we do not adhere to any one diet like CRON etc. We tweak and customise a person’s everyday diet to improve lifestyle and increase life or longevity.
Also quoting a study titled `Modifiable Factors Associated with Survival and Function to Age 90 Years ‘in a prospective cohort study of 2357 healthy men’. The findings were that modifiable healthy behaviours during early elderly years, including smoking abstinence, weight management, blood pressure control, and regular exercise, are associated not only with enhanced life span in men but also with good health and function during older age. This was published in Archives of Internal medicine dated Feb 11 2008

Sharma Its really so simple guys -JUST 30 -40 minutes a day of regular physical activity contributes to health by reducing the heart rate, decreasing the risk for cardiovascular disease, and reducing the amount of bone loss that is associated with age and osteoporosis.

"Don't smoke. A recent Norwegian study showed that 41% of male heavy smokers were dead by 70, vs. 14% of non-smokers.
Alcohol abuse is an underappreciated major cause of illness and death among men.
Eating a few fruits and vegetables, exercising and limiting alcohol should help, too".
