Understanding The Revised 2010 Dietary Guidelines

Due to major upward shifts in the number of Americans leading sedentary lives, while partaking in an unhealthy diet, The National Institute of Health worked to revise their dietary guidelines to encourage and educate individuals on the need for moderate exercise and healthier eating habits. Simply explained these suggested dietary guidelines provide a framework for reducing obesity to improve longevity and achieve healthier outcomes.

What is the focus of the new guidelines?
The core features covered are -

  • Counting and balancing calories for proper weight management right from childhood till old age.
  • Eating nutrient dense foods, choosing smaller portions.
  • Eating more fruits and vegetables and whole grains.
  • Consuming fat free or low fat dairy products.
  • Choosing foods with lower sodium content.
  • Increasing physical activity & reducing time in sedentary behaviours.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar The guidelines clearly state that the majority of adults and one in three children are overweight or obese, it is a crisis that authorities can no longer ignore. There have to be checks & balances at every age /stage to ensure that people maintain a healthy weight. The question is are there any spelt out?

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Hello Mithramalini, Yes The guidelines will apply to us also. Experts in every country are revising their dietary guidelines due to the alarming increase in chronic life style related health problems. However as Ms Mrinal has said its only a matter of time when the new revised Indian Dietary guidelines will also be out, specifically for Indians.
Nevertheless we can start modifying our diets as suggested by the new guidelines and increase our physical activity levels too.

Mrinal Jhangiani Hi Mithramalini, Most countries have been revising their guidelines as a result of the increase in chronic lifestyle diseases. In India, at the National Institute of Nutrition, Dr. Sesikeran and his team have made tremendous strides and are expected to release their much-awaited guidelines within weeks.
The US dietary guidelines provide an excellent framework and are applicable for all at risk for chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, CVD and certain cancers.
