Researchers at the University of Michigan used gene expression data from a data-bank consisting of 3200 samples taken from breast cancer patients to determine which genes were the most frequently seen genes in breast cancers.

The gene AGTR1, was seen to be over expressed in 10% to 20% of the total breast tumors studied, second only to another gene called HER2 (Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) which is responsible for 25% to 30% of total breast cancers diagnosed today. Both genes make normal breast tissue behave like highly active cancer cells.

Currently the drug Herceptin is used to treat cancers associated with the HER2 gene, but research is ongoing to identify and target other genes responsible for breast cancer.

The Michigan research team injected human tumor cells that over expressed AGTR1 into mice and treated them with Losartan. Tumors were seen to reduce by 30% after eight weeks of treatment. The results are promising and need to be validated by human trials involving treatment of AGTR1 associated breast cancers with Losartan.

The current study is exciting in that it is another step in understanding and treatment of breast cancer.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Losartan is an effective anti hypertensive drug. Studies have shown that It causes hyperkalemia (elevation of blood potassium),so potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium should not be used without consulting the prescribing physician.

Pragna I really cannot understand this.So much research is going on, new findings are reported everyday and yet, more & more people are still succumbing to Breast Cancer. It seems my aunt just got done with her 3rd round of chemo, intravenous or something but her count down has started. Her liver is becoming dysfunctional and oedema has begun. When will these new findings be applied on people?

Mrinal Jhangiani Dear Pragna, We hear your frustration - I am so sorry to hear about your aunts condition - we wish her good luck in this battle.

As a side note - early detection is key to better outcomes.
What is critical is that women should be made aware that family history is a significant risk factor and that women with any family history of breast cervical, or ovarian cancer can become a risk factor for any and all females in that family - so regular screening must start at an early age. Also, there are vaccines for certain female cancers - so these should be considered an option.
If your family has a history get yourself checked regularly as well as lead a healthy lifestyle.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Pragna
We do understand your feeling of helplessness despite so much progress in the medical field we sometimes still lose our loved ones. However statistics have shown that there has been increased longevity due to medical science but to a large extent the quality of life such as our diet, physical activity and life style is in our hands.
