You can make a career out of people's growing need to eat the right kind of food.

Dietetics is not just about good nutrition and diet therapy; it has been recognized as a vital industry that plays a big role in preventive and curative health. Dietitians with their expertise in this specialized and complex field of Healthcare help combine their knowledge of food and sensible eating with a love of science and medicine.

Women can play a key role by becoming active members in this field while also staying at home. With technology at everyone's fingertips, and with an education in dietetics from universities such as SNDT and many more, they can easily become active dietitians. There is a desperate need for qualified dietitians in India. Training involves education in standardized guidelines and protocols established by bodies such as the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Hyderabad and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US.

Pay scales vary depending on whether one enters academics (the basic UGC scale is around Rs. 8500); hospitals (starting scale varies from Rs. 6000 to Rs. 4000); gyms or health clubs (Rs. 150-200 per consultation) or weight reduction centers (starts from Rs. 6000-8000 plus incentives). The food industry pays higher (begins at about Rs. 18000-20000) but prefer doctorates.

Branches

Clinical dietitians work in a hospital and assess the nutritional status of patients, customize and monitor the effectiveness of diet plans and develop nutrition programs.
Consultant Dietitians operate their own consulting practice or work with a private organization or a doctor's office. They provide expertise in nutrition consultations to individuals, institutions and businesses.
Community Dietitians apply and distribute knowledge about food and nutrition to specific lifestyles and geographic areas. They coordinate nutritional programs in public health agencies, health clubs and counsel people on good nutritional practices.
Food Service Management Dietitians ensure safe, hygienic, healthy and cost-effective preparation of meals and snacks . They manage food service departments in hospitals, corporate and academic cafeterias.
Research Dietitians develop therapeutic food products required to meet special nutritional needs.

Smt.VHD Central Institute of Home Science is offering the M.Sc course in Nutrition & Dietetics for many years now and recently even Mount Carmel College has started M.Sc course.
