Teens are easily swayed by the seducing power of an ad. A skinny girl draped over a jazzy car, creates a desire among a lot of adolescent girls to follow a radical diet to be skinny as well. Any diet will do. So what if it costs a mere Rs.1000 for each kilo lost!

There are numerous fad diets that offer a quick fix for weight loss. Without naming any, the common point of contention is that the demerits far out weigh the merits. They will all work, for sure, but only temporarily. Typically, you stop the diet and you revert back to your old routine that may have included eating many more calories than your body required. The kilos soon return and this time with a vengeance.

For many desperate adolescents girls cutting out certain foods completely or, using diet pills can make them develop eating disorders. The dangers of irrational or drastic dieting range from simple dry skin to sadly even death.

Here's one fad for the record books:
A popular diet that is low in carbs and high in proteins and fats causes an imbalance in the bodies need for basic nutrients. How come?
i.    The danger here is that the body uses protein food for energy and tax e s the kidneys, leading to future kidney problems.
ii.    Excess protein is also known to leach out calcium of the bones slowly.
iii.    Lower amounts of carbs in terms of roughage too, causing chronic constipation
iv.    Use of high fats leads to ketosis and increased PH of the blood (liver is taxed too) and consequent problems associated with it.
v.    High fats especially saturated fats increases risk of heart diseases.
vi.    Promotes loss of body water, if not replenished will slowly lead to dehydration (again taxes the kidneys)
vii.    Finally, it causes the deficient intake of micronutrients and phyto-chemicals that give the body the necessary health boost.

So, next time you find yourself eating your `fav' chow at your `fav' dugout, go right ahead. Just eat a smaller more sensible portion, or if you are a truly brave one, pick something healthier. Better yet, work it off!

Just use your common sense guys and gals.
If you eat too much, the weight will hang on you like a ton of bricks.

Kanika Jain With size zero fever gripping adolescent girls like anything, they may feel like giving in to fad diets and achieve quick fix solution to weight loss. However, it is healthy balance diet and adequate and regular physical activity, that would help them achieve and also sustain weight loss\weight maintenance in long term.
