"B" is a reminder for patients and family members of the importance of keeping blood pressure levels low and under control so as to prevent various vascular complications from occuring. Along with blood pressure is maintaining urine micro-albumin levels as well, as abnormal levels are an indicator of diabetic nephropathy and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Hypertension (blood pressure) is a common side effect of diabetes. Hypertension is also a major risk factor for CVD and microvascular complications such as retinopathy and nephropathy. Blood pressure should be measured routinely.

Diabetes requires regular monitoring to see that all parameters are within the accepted range. We can take the table below as a rough guide as it has to be customised for the individual

Diet-Each meal
Eyes/nerves-Yearly
BP -Once a week and more often if labile
HbA1c -2-4 months depending on levels
Glucose -Once a day at least for those whose levels are high or else 5-6 times a week at different times of the day to exercise control
Kidneys -Yearly for protein
Check Feet -Everyday
Weight - Weekly if trying to reduce weight or once a month
Exercise -at least 30-40 mts (twice a day is better)

Dear Kerry,

Self Monitoring of Blood glucose (SMBG) is identified as one of the responsible tool in Diabetes Management.

It's advantages are:
1. Blood glucose can be measured at home, office, while traveling and when exercising.
2. It is an effective, sensible and convenient method.
3. Results are displayed with in seconds
4. The acquired results will be useful in tracking blood glucose levels over a period of time, to inform the doctor for changes in medications, will provide information about the effects of food and activity on blood glucose levels.
5. Helps to identify hypo and hyperglycemia and accordingly prompt action can be taken
6. Choices about activities and exercises can be made depending on the sugar levels.

It is not necessary for you to prick yourself everyday to check the blood glucose levels, but you may check at least 3- 4 times a week and at different timings like fasting, postprandial, before dinner, after exercise and sometimes even in the middle of the night.

Apart from doing SMBG it is also necessary to check your HbA1C twice a year, keep a check on you Blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diet and exercise. A comprehensive management like this would help in preventing any further complications because of hyper or hypoglycemia.

Hi,
I have been recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.I check my blood glucose regulary with glucometer.Is it possible that I stop monitoring blood sugar and instead go for A1C testing twice a year?

Hi Kerry,

Checking your blood glucose at home with a meter tells you what your blood sugar level is at any particular time, whereas, A1C test gives you a picture of your average blood glucose control for the past 2 to 3 months. The results give you and your doctor a good idea of how well your diabetes treatment plan is working. However, it is not replacement for self testing of blood glucose.

Hi,
I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes recently.I monitor my blood glucose regularly.Isnt it possible that I stop monitoring blood glucose from my glucometer often and instead just go for AIC twice a year?
