Dr Brage Amundsen`s group study* compared the effect of aerobic interval training against moderate continuous training on 200 patients .The former showed a marked improvement in Peak Oxygen consumption as well as improvement of left ventricular function. They also showed a marked improvement on muscle contractility. Dr.Amundsen felt that it would be more realistic if patients are made to understand that it's not hard to do high intens ity exercise despite their heart condition.
Independently, a study in France was on the role of strength training on CVD patients. Dr Francois Carré (Hôpital Pontchaillou, Rennes, France) found that CVD patients had increased strengthening of the large muscles when they did strength training over and above aerobic exercise. This clearly showed that the patients should be encouraged to do 'Resistance training' in addition to aerobic exercises. It also drove home the fact that the benefits of exercise prevail well over the risks for CVD patients. A word of caution here - exertion increases the risk so the physician must evaluate the risk for the patient in question and suggest a suitable program. Patients should also be educated about the same.
