I am healthy but my annual blood report showed my total cholesterol is over 200!

What should I do?

  • If you are young and healthy talk to your doctor about your cholesterol results. Start and regularly take the medications he may put you on.
  • Consult with one of our nutritionists to assess your diet and risk factors. The nutritionists will customize new diet plans that are specially suited to your health needs, personal likes and dislikes and lifestyle.
  • Implement the recommended lifestyle and dietary changes.
  • Learn to eat heart-healthy, cholesterol lowering foods and start a regular exercise regimen.
  • Reduce long term risks by lowering your cholesterol back to optimal levels.

Tina Mathur A study published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology reports that one egg yolk can be worse than some fast-food meals when it comes to cholesterol (Egg yolk which, depending on size, can contain 215 to 275 mg of cholesterol and some fast-food meals can contain as much as 150 mg of cholesterol). So apart from keeping check on intake of high fat foods one should take care of limiting yolk intake. Especially by people who have genetic predisposition to cardiovascular diseases.
Patients at risk of cardiovascular disease are advised to limit their total dietary cholesterol to less than 200 mg per day.

Kanika Jain Hi Prashant,
One should start getting screened for cholesterol from 20 years of age. According to American Heart Association, it's a good idea to start having cholesterol checked even at an early age especially if there is family history of heart disease. Lack of regular physical activity, poor dietary habits and genetics can all affect a child's cholesterol levels. So its important to stress upon healthy eating habits and regular and adequate physical activity in children too.

Prashant Chawla What is the ideal age to get started with cholesterol screening?

Mridula Ghai I would like to add one more thing that generally people who are thin are under this misconception that they will not have high cholesterol as long as they are thin. Though overweight people are more likely to have high cholesterol, but thin people should also have their cholesterol checked regularly. Often people who don't gain weight easily become casual about what they are eating.
One must have cholesterol checked regularly regardless of weight, physical activity and diet.

Kanika Jain According to American heart association, compelling evidence shows that the atherosclerotic process (buildup of fatty plaque in arteries) begins in childhood and progresses slowly into adulthood which can lead to coronary heart disease. They have even given recommended cholesterol levels in children and adolescents (2-19 years old)-

Total cholesterol (mg/dL)

Acceptable — less than 170
Borderline — 170-199
High — 200 or greater

LDL cholesterol (mg/dL)

Acceptable — less than 110
Borderline — 110-129
High — 130 or greater

Its high time that parents should stress importance of healthy eating and regular physical activity right from early age.

Uma Maheshwari Recently when we got our health check done, the dietician we met for nutritional counseling said that the Total cholesterol should be less than 180, LDL should be less that 90 and HDL cholesterol should be above 55. Also she said that the Triglycerides should be less than 130 or 120.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Uma
When deciding on what to eat, consider the recommended daily limits on cholesterol in your food and choose foods accordingly:

If you are healthy, it's recommended that you limit your dietary cholesterol intake to less than 300 milligrams (mg) a day.
If you have cardiovascular disease, diabetes or a high low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") blood cholesterol level, you should limit your dietary cholesterol intake to less than 200 mg a day.

Kanika Jain Normally people get their cholesterol checked and if it comes out to be in normal range they just forget about it. However, it is always advisable to go for complete lipid profile to get a true picture.

Also, lifestyle changes like eating a healthy balanced diet and doing adequate physical activity should be implemented as early as possible. Do not wait for medical reports to come in “above normal range” to start with these. One has to keep in mind that prevention is always better than cure!
