SCREENING FOR HIGH CHOLESTEROL
Have your cholesterol checked regularly starting at age 35. (For Indians 25 years and above). If you are younger than 35, talk to your doctor about testing your cholesterol levels, specially if:

  • You have diabetes.
  • You have high blood pressure.
  • Heart disease runs in your family
  • You smoke

LDL cholesterol levels
< 100 ideal for people who have a higher risk of heart disease.
100 to 129 is near optimal.
130 to 159 is borderline high.
>160 means you're at a higher risk for heart disease.

HDL cholesterol levels
< 40 means you're at higher risk for heart disease.
60 > greatly reduces your risk of heart disease.

If you're overweight, losing just 5 to 10 pounds can help lower cholesterol levels. Also limit your overall cholesterol intake to less than 300 milligrams per day.

Poonam Several recent studies have revealed that young, slim and otherwise healthy looking adults have high cholesterol levels. Many of them are "invisibly obese"-i.e they have a high amount of fat mass.
This calls for screening at a young age, because high cholesterol levels may lead to higher risk for developing heart disease at a young age. Changes in lifestyle, like reducing alcohol, fatty foods, smoking and increasing physical activity are crucial in reducing risk.

Ms Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Hello Mr Anuj
It is rather worrying that you have rather high reading of cholesterol. Please do not take it lightly just because you are thin and healthy and probably young too. These are not a deterrent for heart problems for people who have `Hypercholesterolemia’ . You cannot attribute it only to eating French fries, tamarind rice or potato bhaji at the office cafeteria, there are a host of other factors which add to the cause. We suggest you log onto our website www.nutritionvista.com and register with us so that in a few months time we can get you back onto the road to good health. I repeat your high cholesterol levels are a matter of concern but they are also reversible provided you work on it appropriately.
Thank you and hoping you will take necessary action
Warm regards

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy Dear Prateek,

If we consume a diet that includes food from all the five food groups like whole grains and cereals, pulses and sprouts, low fat milk and diary products, fresh vegetables and fruits, lean meat, poultry and fish, this will provide all the macro and micro nutrients our body requires for normal functioning and also keep our skin and hair healthy. Avoid processed foods, foods rich in fat and sugar.

Consume foods rich in Protein, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron and Zinc to prevent premature graying of hair. Sources are, Green leafy Vegetables, lean meat and poultry, green tea, tofu, soy chunks, low fat dairy products, beans, lentils, nuts like walnuts and almonds.

Premature graying of the hair can be due to certain conditions like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and Vitamin B12 deficiency. Also smoking is associated with premature graying of hair. Please talk to your doctor and schedule tests to rule out the above conditions.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any doubts or queries.

Regards,
Sangeetha Narayana Swamy,

Ms.Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Hello Devan
As there is family history of colon cancer it is advisable to get yourself screened regularly for the same, even if you are currently thin and healthy. It would be helpful if you discuss the issue with your family physician too.
With regard to regularly eating the top ten foods we have listed and other anti oxidant rich food, if you all take a little extra effort to prepare them (some foods can also be eaten raw) you and your room mates will benefit not only from preventing cancer but many other diseases such as Diabetes and Cardiac related. It is worth the effort of educating your room mates about the same as healthy eating is an investment for your future health.
Warm regards

Ms Geetanjali Kelkar Hi Prateek

Premature greying of hair is common these days. It could be due to heredity, increased stress, lack of protein in diet, pollution, chemicals in water. Amla is best remedy for hair fall or grey hair. Eat one amla everyday, massaging the scalp with amla oil or powder works wonders. Curry leaves also a beneficial effect.
