The Earlier Dutch Study
A recent Dutch study found that vitamin D may also be playing a vital role in the management of metabolic syndrome in the elderly. Metabolic syndrome, a multi factorial disorder, commonly seen in the elderly, is the common name for a group of risk factors which increase the chances of developing heart disease, diabetes and other diseases.
A person who has at least three of the following risk factors is considered to have metabolic syndrome:
- Abdominal obesity - excess fat around the waist is a greater risk factor for heart disease than excess fat in other parts of the body
- Above normal triglyceride level
- Lower than normal HDL cholesterol level
- Abnormal blood pressure
- Above normal fasting blood sugar
