Conclusion
Co-author of the study, Dr Marelise Eekhoff, of VU University Medical Centre, Amsterdam stated, "Because the metabolic syndrome increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, an adequate vitamin D level in the body might be important in the prevention of these diseases"
The elderly could develop Vitamin D deficiency because of
- Inadequate food intake due to poorer appetite and illnesses
- Decreased intestinal absorption
- Inadequate exposure to sunlight
- Decreased capacity of the skin to synthesize vitamin D
- Impaired kidney function
Vitamin D can be obtained from several foods in addition to skin exposure to ultraviolet B radiation from the sun.
Persons at risk of vitamin D deficiency should consult with their physicians after evaluating their diets and confer whether they need to take certain supplements.
For now it is recommended that individuals prevent or delay metabolic syndrome, mainly with lifestyle changes to their diet and exercise regimen.
