Dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF)
Cause of Dengue: Dengue caused by a virus is transmitted to humans via an infected mosquito. This virus is rampant mainly in tropical and sub-tropical climates with concentrations in urban and semi-urban areas where large populations have put a strain on public works facilities – namely drainage, sewage and sanitation. Dengue most often strikes during the monsoon or winters, as most viruses thrive in cold weather by hanging in the air longer /stronger. Today statistics show that globally over the last few decades the incidence of dengue has grown drastically and about two fifths of the world's population are now at risk.

I wonder if fogging is a healthy method of getting rid of mosquitoes and prevent breeding.

My apartment complex has a pool and it looks quite clean and good. My question is " Is it not safe for me to take my kids for a swim in the pool during monsoons. I stay in Bangalore and here it rains mostly in the evenings and mornings and late noons are pretty warm and my kids enjoy going to the pool, please advise."

Hello Sujata, as we all know germs cannot be seen through the naked eye however what you can ensure is that it appears clean. That apart for hygienic purposes, please talk to your swimming pool maintenance person that (1) the pool water is recycled continuously and goes through a good back water filtration system and (2) the water is regularly chlorinated as per norms to act as a good disinfectant.
The good thing about outdoor swimming pools is that sunlight falls on it and acts as a natural disinfectant too. So I think if your children are otherwise healthy `Go ahead and make a splash of it.’

Srry, one more question - how can people tell if its malaria or dengue, as both have similar symptoms.

Hello Mr Raman, if a person is running a high temperature he should immediately consult a physician who will monitor the fever and suggest blood test when he suspects its beyond viral fever or influenza. So, if one is running a fever - how soon after developing fever should the patient get his blood tested for dengue.

if the fever doesnt subsides within 48 hrs of crocin/meftal tablets one should immediately consult doctor who will recommend desired tests.
