Treatment for Dengue:- There is no special treatment apart from symptomatic and supportive treatment. Patients need to be hospitalised to monitor their vital signs. As most patients are prone to dehydration, fluid replacement is vital, if need be even administered intravenously, (dextrose or normal saline). Apart form adequate hydration, Bed rest, NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and not aspirins either)/ and paracetemol for pain relief, there is a need to bring fever down at any cost.

If the bleeding is excessive and platelet count falls down drastically (below 20,000) then the patient may require platelet transfusion.

Diet During Dengue:
On principle the diet for patients suffering from dengue should slowly move from fluids to easily digestible foods but balanced diet, with foods of high biological value (example dense carbs, lean meats, egg or pre-digested /processed lentils) are easy to digest and high in fiber and fluid.

When a patient is suffering from dengue fever, he should be given (1) Plenty of fruit juice and other foods which provide both hydration and energy, (2) soft bland foods that are easily digested and absorbed by the body.

The patient should be fed every two hours, in small quantities and it should also make him feel better and well soon.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar I wonder if fogging is a healthy method of getting rid of mosquitoes and prevent breeding.

Sujatha My apartment complex has a pool and it looks quite clean and good. My question is " Is it not safe for me to take my kids for a swim in the pool during monsoons. I stay in Bangalore and here it rains mostly in the evenings and mornings and late noons are pretty warm and my kids enjoy going to the pool, please advise."

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Hello Sujata, as we all know germs cannot be seen through the naked eye however what you can ensure is that it appears clean. That apart for hygienic purposes, please talk to your swimming pool maintenance person that (1) the pool water is recycled continuously and goes through a good back water filtration system and (2) the water is regularly chlorinated as per norms to act as a good disinfectant.
The good thing about outdoor swimming pools is that sunlight falls on it and acts as a natural disinfectant too. So I think if your children are otherwise healthy `Go ahead and make a splash of it.’

Raman Chauhan Srry, one more question - how can people tell if its malaria or dengue, as both have similar symptoms.
Which is worse?

Vijayalakshmi Hello Mr Raman, if a person is running a high temperature he should immediately consult a physician who will monitor the fever and suggest blood test when he suspects its beyond viral fever or influenza. Our articles are intended to keep you informed so that you are also aware of the different health challenges and complications if not attended to, and not take it too lightly.AT the same time it is not to displace or replace doctors/ medical fraternity. So our suggestion is when anybody is not feeling too well, kindly consult your family physician or GP.
