10 Nutritional Tips for seniors with dentures: Eating a nutritious & balanced diet is important for the health of your teeth and gums as well as for the rest of your body.
- Do not skip a meal, this will slow down the metabolism and makes you feel sluggish and also lead to making poor nutrition choices later.
- Breakfast choices can be soft cooked oat meal with milk and honey, soft toast with a light coating of peanut butter plus a fruit milkshake, omelet with finely chopped or pureed vegetables, or a scrambled egg, soft cooked idly, rava porridge etc.
- Lunch and Dinner options can be vegetable or chicken stew with whole wheat bread toast, quinoa salad with finely chopped green vegetables and mozzarella cheese, soft cooked broken wheat with pureed greens curry and steamed and mashed vegetables.
- Include a low fat yogurt with mashed fruits in it.
- Try warm and well-cooked salads instead of raw ones.
- Healthy snacks can be fruit milkshakes, apple stew, mashed sweet potatoes, fruits and vegetable juices with the fiber, digestive biscuits, low fat yogurt and cottage cheese, soft cooked veggies with hummus.
- Have small and frequent meal instead of three large meals
- Be careful with hot liquids and foods so you don't burn your mouth and gums. You won't be able to determine the temperatures when wearing dentures.
- Slice fresh fruits and vegetables into very thin slices or chop them finely so they are easy to chew, or better yet cook them slightly before serving.
- Whole grain breads and cereals are good for you, but they may stick to your palette and teeth – follow them with liquids to make them easier to swallow.
