Dental Problems Associated with Aging –
Oral health is often neglected by senior citizens. Due to some of these physiological handicaps, seniors tend to avoid foods that are hard to chew like whole grains, vegetables and fruits which are very important foods generally suggested for the prevention of diabetes, cardiac problems, dyslipidemia etc.
This scenario is changing with many seniors opting for complete or partial dentures. Regardless of this, many older adults who have compromised dental health choose a diet or food that they can comfortably chew. Unfortunately, these diets are often low in fiber with no fruits or vegetables or refined carbs. This also reduces the intake of micronutrients.
Senior citizens should concentrate on consuming a diet that is planned around fruits, vegetables and whole grain food groups. Whole grains should be included over processed foods because of their better-quality nutritional composition. Low fat or fat free diary can be an excellent source of calcium and vitamin D and also other nutrients that elderly are generally deficient in.
