A wide range of nutritional problems exist amongst the elderly, ranging from frank nutrient deficiencies to micronutrient imbalances.
Malnutrition in the elderly may result from the following -
- Certain debilitating diseases
- Medications which may change the way food tastes and smells leading to a reduction in appetite or lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
- Digestive changes which may reduce the intake of certain foods. E.g. lactose intolerance
- Chewing difficulties due to oral health problems
- Financial issues which may not permit the purchase of a variety of healthy foods
- Physical disability which makes it difficult for them to shop for a variety of healthy foods or even prepare their own food
