Changes in nutritional requirements
While the body grows only for some years, it continues to change as long as the individual lives. Nutritional intake needs to be modified to keep up the demands of the changing physiology. The elderly, who are individuals aged 60 years and above have nutritional needs which are different from younger adults. For them the requirements change every 5 to 10 years.
- Calories: The elderly get less active as they age. With a decrease in activity, their lean body mass decreases (sacropenia) and fat mass increases. Their basal metabolic rate too decreases. As a result caloric needs reduce. However, the need for some other vital nutrients increases. Women need between 1600-2200 calories and men need about 1800-2400 calories depending upon their activity levels.
- Proteins: Proteins needs do not change unless there is a debilitating disease. Proteins must come from sources like lean meats and milk and milk products.
- Fats: Seniors must consume more healthy fats. A reduction in the overall quantity of fat is advisable. It not only helps to cut calories but also to manage chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity etc. Lean meats, low fat dairy products, nuts and seeds are good.
- Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates still remain the main source of energy, but, glucose tolerance may decrease with advancing years. Hence, the consumption of complex carbohydrates from whole grains, fruits and vegetables must increase as compared to refined carbs. This also results in increased fiber intake which helps to improve bowel function.
