The eternal Teacup – A cup full of health? What is the composition of tea
Tea contains upto 30% of its dry weight as catechins (antioxidants) and has negligible amounts of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Tea also has other substances, namely, caffeine (about 3% of dry weight), theanine and threobromine and theophylline.

Tea is an excellent source of minerals, mainly, manganese and potassium.

Catechins especially epigallocatechin galate(EGCG) are highest in white and green teas. Black tea has a substance called theaflavins which green tea does not possess.

Green tea- What are the facts?
Green tea has been in the limelight since the last few years for its potential health benefits. It has been used as a beverage and a medicine in Asia since ancient times. Studies have demonstrated the following benefits:

  • Protects against many types of cancers – a property attributed to the presence of antioxidants
  • Induces thermogenesis and stimulates fat oxidation thus increasing the metabolic rate, without increasing the heart rate.
  • Works as an antidepressant and lowers the prevalence of cognitive decline.
  • Is a hypocholesterolemic agent and thus prevents cardiovascular disease
  • Reduces dental cavities and improves bone density
  • Reduces kidney stones
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Has antibiotic properties
  • Boosts the immune system and suppresses auto immune disorders
  • Improves breathing in those with asthma

The U.S. FDA, however, stated that the evidence did not support health claims for green tea consumption and a reduced risk of cancer (2005) and reduction in the number of risk factors for CVD (2006).

Black tea
Black tea accounts for the majority of the tea consumed all over the world. Black tea is more oxidized than other teas. It has a stronger flavour and higher caffeine content than oolong, green and white teas. Black tea is often blended with other plants in order to obtain a beverage eg Earl Grey, English Breakfast etc.

Shipra For maximum health benefits From tea ....it should be freshly brewed, not boiled and with no milk added. One should not take more than 4 cups but spread out the whole day.

Many people like to swallow or down their medicine with tea as they form various tannin compounds and medicines do not work effectively. That’s why the Chinese say that tea destroys medicines.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Till recently everybody thought that green tea was the healthiest tea of all due to a powerful anti-oxidant in it -epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg). Since black tea was the result of fermentation wherein it EGCg was converted into other compounds, it was considered not as healthy. However, recent studies indicate the compounds contained in black tea - theaflavins and thearubigens - do more than contribute to its dark color and distinctive flavor. They also provide health benefits originally attributed solely to green tea.
