Benefits of Tea
- In a study in Japan, tea leaf extract obstructed fat absorption in the guts of rats fed on a high fat diet. The tea leaf extract also reduced overall body fat. The study suggested that regular intake of tea may reduce the risk of developing a fatty liver. The study pointed out that the fermentation process that converts green tea into black tea creates the fat fighting properties in the tea.
- The amino acid L theanine which is found in high doses in the tea plant has been shown to make the mind calmer and more alert.
- It protects against cardiovascular disease.
Tea - A double edged sword
- Tea is one of the few natural sources of fluoride and may have a positive effect on gum disease and tooth decay. However, excessive consumption may lead to osteofluorosis and fractures. White tea has less fluoride than black and green tea.
- Caffeine in makes the mind alert but is also addictive and can affect sleep
- It may chelate (bind) with iron and prevent its absorption.
