  • Fever by itself is not an illness; it's the body's own way of fighting infections or sickness.
  • Fevers are usually caused due to various infections such as bacterial, viral, fungal or immune mediated.
  • Do not panic if your child has fever, but just remember to keep a strict watch on his behavior and activities to monitor the severity of his illness.
  • Any drastic changes in the child's behavior can be brought immediately to a doctor's attention.

Diet during fevers -
Common symptoms during fever are:
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lack of interest
  • Weakness
  • Cold sweats.

In some cases there can even be vomiting, diarrhea, cough & cold depending on the infection.

It's most important to manage all these conditions with good nutrition to alleviate the symptoms and make the child feel comfortable.
  • The diet usually prescribed is a high calorie, high protein, low fat, & a high fluid diet.
  • The first two or 3 days can be more of a fluid diet consisting of soups, glucose water, juices, milk (only if there's no diarrhea). Give small frequent meals at regular intervals, every 2 hrs which can be gradually increased to every 4 hrs.
  • Include foods which are soft, bland, easily digested and absorbed like gruels, cereal and milk, soft fruits like banana, papaya, orange, musambi, melons etc. soft or mashed khichidi or mashed curd rice or softly boiled veggies can also be included,
  • Protein intake of the diet should be increased, so it important to provide high nutritive value protein like milk, eggs & dhal
  • Fatty foods, spicy and highly fibrous foods are difficult to digest and should be avoided.
  • Its also very important to remember that during fever, there is an increase need of certain nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Calcium, iron & sodium.

Foods that should be included:
  • Fruit juices
  • Glucose water
  • Milk
  • Coconut water
  • Barley water
  • Custards
  • Thin dhals
  • Eggs
  • Gruel's
  • Vegetable juices
  • Soups
  • Cereal preparations
  • Tender meat
  • Baked fish
  • Buttermilk with a pinch of salt
  • Boiled leafy veggies
  • Boiled veggies (carrots, beans, pumpkin, sweet potato etc)
  • Dried fruits or dried nuts blended with milk
  • Orange and yellow fruits (citrus fruits)

Foods that should be avoided:
  • Butter
  • Ghee
  • Vegetable oil
  • Irritating fibrous foods
  • Fried foods
  • Rich pastries
  • Rich puddings
  • Highly spiced preparations
  • Strongly flavored beverages
  • Cream soups

Some things to keep in mind:
  • Don't force your child to eat if he /she doesn't like it, just stop and feed them after a short interval.
  • Make sure they get plenty of rest.
  • Give your child a sponge bath with room temperature - cool water to bring the fever down and make them feel comfortable.
  • Dress them with light weight clothes and just cover them with a light sheet.
  • Keep the child's room airy, well ventilated and maintain the right temperature, not too cold or too hot.
  • If the fever consistently spikes above 102-103 for 2-3 days you must call the pediatrician immediately.

If your child is a healthy eater and consumes a balanced diet that meets his or her daily requirements, they will be better able to fight off viruses, and bacterial infections.

afra My cousin is 1 year 10 months old. She had 103 degree fever for about 2 weeks. Her temperature is always in the range between 101 to 103.She is very weak. Even if her temperature drops, she shows very rough behavior as it is not a common thing for her. Often she is agitated in her sleep. My cousin didn't had any problems in her diet as she used to eat everything but recently she is suffering from a loss of appetite. She often stays up late at night and shows irritated behavior if any of her orders are not followed by us. This is a very uncommon sight for us as she was a very calm child. Also she suffers runny nose during high fever. Thank you.

17 April, 2013 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Hello Bushra,
I can understand your concern for your daughter. It is common for children to lose their appetites during and just after an illness. You will need to be patient and she will eventually gain back her appetite. In the meanwhile you will need to keep giving her small but frequent meals.
You should give her concentrated meals so that even a very small quantity provides her with nutrition and energy. Some of the foods you can give her are
Sooji/wheat halwa /ladoo made with little ghee (she might enjoy it because it is sweet)
Fruits like banana, mango, chikoo
Khichri made with rice, dal and vegetables
Porridge made with sooji/ragi flour
Upma / pohe with vegetables
Idli with light sambhar
Kheer made with rice and milk
Plain milk

You can give her finger foods like small pieces of carrot/cucumber/boiled potato/puffed rice/small pieces of chapatti to eat by herself. She might enjoy it and eat a little more than otherwise.

Please do not force her too much to eat because that may put her off even more from food.
If you need any other help please do let me know.

amar Dear Doctor,My son adopted a baby who is about 1yr and 6month old.My daughter in law loves her much but the child take about 1hr for taking in her milk diet. She is always take special care of her.She is forcing her to take food at a time which according to me is not good.Only diet must be taken when it is needed. Now she is having temperature and paediatritian provided her the necessary treatment.I need your advice about her regular diet in indian conditions and normal food and fruits to be given to her.

17 April, 2013 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Hello Mr Amar
It is very common for new moms to get obsessed with feeding their babies.
While it is important that the baby gets adequate nutrition, too much fussing over food may become a habit and become difficult to break away from for a long time.
It is always best to have a relaxed comfortable environment while feeding the baby and sometimes let the baby get hungry and demand food.
Your baby is at the stage when different kinds of foods can be introduced, so increasing the variety of foods may also improve acceptance of foods. Please introduce new foods one at a time only.
Let the baby eat finger foods on her own. That will create an interest in eating and also make her feel good about her independence.
A daily balanced diet for a one and a half year old child includes:
3 cups of milk – you can make ragi/wheat/sooji porridge from milk and use it for breakfast and evening snack. You can add some sugar/jaggery/honey for taste.
Dal – about ½ cup for lunch and dinner
Chapatti -1 or rice – ½ cup for lunch and dinner
Vegetables- green leafy – ¼ cup – once a day
Soft cooked other vegetables – ¼ cup once a day
Fruit – 1 banana + 1 other fruit per day
You need to e very creative with your cooking eg you can give idli and sambhar sometimes, khichri at other times or even a soft and mildly flavoured biryani and curd on other days.
You can make a banana milk shake or even a custard from the milk.
I hope this has been helpful.

Poonam As I wrote to you, your child probably has food poisoning or a stomach infection due to which he has fever. In case his fever is high you may need to give him a paracetamol syrup. Please do consult his paediatrician because if he has an infection it may need to be treated with antibiotics, which only a doctor should recommend.
You need to replenish the fluids lost from his body due to vomiting. The best is an oral rehydration solution which you can prepare as follows:

1 glass plain water
1 pinch of salt
1 teaspoon sugar
Give him 2-3 glasses in a day.

You can also give other fluids like, pomegranate juice, coconut water, fresh lime, clear soups. Avoid milk.
Rice & dal or khichri, banana, apple, pomegranate, curd/buttermilk are all good during an upset digestion/infection.
Please do let me know if you need any other assistance.

17 April, 2013 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Hello Gayathri
As I wrote to you, our area of expertise is diet and nutrition, and I would like you to check with your child’s paediatrician about the medication.
It is better to avoid milk for a few days. Curd and buttermilk should be given instead. The leg pain maybe due to weakness. Does he have diarrhoea? Then it is better to give him only rice, curd, buttermilk, khichri, banana and apple.

While wakes up she played a lot and was normal even after fever. One more thing added is she had a stomach upset i guess becoz yeaterday she went for potty 5times(normal 2) and today also till now 2times which is nt usual in her case. I didnt cunsult her doctor becoz i thought its too early. But i am very worried. Can i give her egg, milk, khichdi in this period if she is having fever...??? And what else should i do...???

17 April, 2013 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Hello Sheetal
As I wrote to you, your daughter probably had an upset stomach due to which she got fever. Her fever subsided because of the crocin syrup you gave her. In case her diarrhoea and fever continue, please do consult her paediatrician because she maybe having a stomach infection which will need treatment. Whenever your daughter has a stomach upset please give her rice & dal or khichri, banana, apple, pomegranate, curd/buttermilk. Give her plenty of water and oral rehydration solution – if she is loosing a lot of water in the diarrhoea.
You can make it at home as follows. Mix together:
1 glass plain water
1 pinch of salt
1 teaspoon sugar
Give her 2-3 glasses in a day.

Please avoid milk and eggs.

17 April, 2013 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Hello Ms Maruthi
It is common for young children to get recurrent bouts of fever, the frequency of which gradually reduces as children grow. However, your child’s paediatrician will be the best judge for diagnosing the cause of the same. The doctor may want to conduct a thorough physical examination and conduct other diagnostic tests to pin point the cause.
You could help build your child’s immunity and prevent recurrent infections by providing good quality nutrition to him.
Give him plenty of fluids, like, plain water, hot vegetable and dal soups, fruit juices, milk, coconut water, fresh lime and thin dals. For solids, you can give light foods like, rice, khichri, idli, pohe, vegetable upma, boiled vegetables, fruits, ragi /rice/wheat porridge etc. The foods should be not be spicy or oily.
If you need other help please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

17 April, 2013 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Dear Mr Dash
From the medication, i.e antibiotics prescribed to your son, it appears that he was suffering from an infection.
Since he had an infection, initially his fever would peak every 5 hours, but with antibiotics his infection decreased gradually because of which the gap increased to 8- 10 hours. As the infection comes under total control his fever too will disappear. If the antibiotic dose prescribed to him is over, please do not continue giving it to him without checking with his paediatrician.
Children do become fussy and picky eaters when they fall ill. Do not force him too much. If he is happy with milk please let him have it and gradually include other light foods in small quantities. You could concentrate on giving him plenty of fluids like soups, juices, coconut water, fresh lime etc. Other light foods like rice, dal, pohe, upma, soft cooked vegetables, porridge, fruits are also good for him.
Please let me know if we can be of any other help.

Poonam It is common for children to lose their appetite during fever and soon after, but you must ensure that your child gets some good nutrition. This will not only help him recover, but will also help build his immunity to prevent repeated infections and bouts of fever. You should include plenty of fluids, like, hot soups (preferably clear), fruit juices, milk, glucose water, barley water, thin dals in the diet. For solids you can give light foods like, toasted breads, rice, boiled vegetables, fruits, light porridge. The food should be not be spicy or oily. Cakes, pastries and other heavy desserts need to be avoided as well.

Poonam Hello Mr Krishnahari
I am sure it must be quite disturbing to see your baby crying so much, but she is probably uncomfortable. Have you talked to her paediatrician about this problem? She probably needs a thorough health check up to pin point the problem.
I suggest you consult her doctor immediately and treat her appropriately and make her comfortable at the earliest.
Babies usually suffer from gastric issues with build up of gas which leads to colic pain. Many children cry a lot due to this. You could try giving her gripe water or other home remedies for relieving her gas problem.
Please write in and let me know once you have spoken to her doctor.

13 September, 2012 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Usually a viral fever can come with bouts of high temperature for 3,5 or even 7 days. The fever usually subsides with a paracetamol and then again starts rising within 4-6 hours. The gap normally increases till the fever completely subsides. A viral fever takes its own course and can be controlled with paracetamols.
You must give your baby plenty of liquids in the form of soups, juices, fresh lime, coconut water, milk and even plain water.
You have not mentioned the age of your child , but, please try to give him light and soft foods like, khichri, rice, boiled vegetables, fruits, porridge, upma, pohe and idli. The food should be not be spicy or oily.
In case the fever continues please contact your baby’s paediatrician soon.

13 August, 2012 | Poonam Vaswani | Reply

Poonam Vaswani Hello Srividya,
Children often become fussy and picky about their food when they are not well. This could result in inadequate nutrition, and a drop in immunity.
It is important to feed your child nutritious food and also include a lot of liquids.
Fresh fruits and juices, and plenty of fresh vegetables and soups will be good. You must include plenty of green leafy vegetables . You can either boil the vegetables or prepare soups from them.
You should also ensure that you feed him good quality protein foods like, milk, boiled or poached eggs, boiled chicken/ soups, if you are a non vegetarian or lightly cooked dals if you are vegetarian.
The food should be light, non oily and non spicy.
Please do not force feed your child. Give him small frequent meals and preferably when his fever is under control and not when it is rising.
You must get him examined by a doctor if he has fever for more than a day.
We wish your son a speedy recovery.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar

Dear Ms Savi, Viral fever can be quite a drain on the child’s health but till date we have never heard about children or even adults getting a swelling because of it, be it in the back or legs. We suggest you take him to another well known pediatrician for a second opinion just to rule out anything that your current doctor could have probably missed ( no offense meant ) and do whatever lab tests he recommends.
We are sure that if it is viral fever then it will have subsided by now or will do so, very soon. Meanwhile ensure that you are actively working at keeping your little sons temperature under check with prescribed medicines and wet packs. You should also ensure that you are giving the child lots of different fluids including water to prevent dehydration. The child should been encouraged to eat foods such as gruel, fruits and/or fruit juices, electrolyte solutions, thin dals, egg or any custards and gradually include more solids for a quicker recovery .
We wish the child a speedy recovery.

now she has started going to school and has high fever (fluctuating between 103-104). she is on antibiotics again.

she is very weak compared to other kids her age. she is 17 kgs for her age and 106 cm height.

Poonam Dear Ms Pujari,
As I wrote to you in my email, a viral infection usually takes it’s own course and normally subsides in 3-5 days. Your baby will get high fever for the first couple of days and you will have to control it with doses of paracetamol whenever the fever starts rising. The frequency and intensity will gradually reduce and you will need to give her less frequent doses. If you are concerned about her condition, you must contact her paediatrician immediately.
You must have noticed that your baby does not have much of an appetite during, but you must ensure that she gets some good nutrition through small, frequent meals. This will not only help her recover, but will also help build immunity to prevent repeated infections. Please keep her well hydrated and give her plenty of fluids in the form of water, fresh lime, juices, warm soups and milk.
She should be fed a light diet consisting of toasted breads, rice, boiled vegetables, thin dals, fruits, light porridge. The food should be not be spicy or oily. Please do let us know if you need any further help.
We do hope your baby is already feeling much better!

Vishal My 2 and half year old son has just recovered from 8 days viral fever taking Meftal P, Crocin and Emset and a syrup for cough. He has been very arrogant and aggressive during his illness and even after his recovery. He is hitting and biting since then and now also he is not ready to take any solid food although he drinks lot of water on his own. Please advise if this is normal and is there a step to be taken to get him back to his normal behavior and health. We are afraid from starting his pre-school due to same reason and delaying. He has also recently started showing breath holding symptoms.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Hello Mr. Mohan Raj
I am sorry to hear that your child was ill and hospitalized, but as long as the pediatrician is treating the illness you know that your baby is in safe hands. Viral or bacterial infections cause both fever and fatigue (tiredness) because the body is trying to kill bacteria and viruses. As viral fever in children lasts anywhere from 4 -8 days they need to take rest and conserve energy. So let them sleep as much as possible.
Children with fever may not feel hungry, and it is not necessary to force them to eat. But fever increases the child's risk of becoming dehydrated. So encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids frequently. Fluids such as milk (cow's or breast), formula, water, tender coconut water, fruit juices or even eating fruit jelly is good. In a matter of time the child will slowly get onto solids and get back all the energy for normal activity.

Gunjan Hi,
My daughter is 14months old and she oftenly suffers from fever and congestion. Shes been hospitalised twice for acute bronchiolitis. She is fine for 10-15days and again resuffers from fever. Kindly help. Also let me know what food items should I give her to build up her immunity and she doesnt fall sick often. Thanks in advance.

11 March, 2012 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Dear Ms Gunjan,
We can understand your anxiety for your child. Children often become fussy and picky about their food when they do not keep well. This could also result in inadequate nutrition, which leads to a further drop in immunity.
It is important to feed your child with nutritious foods and plenty of liquids.
You may need to feed her small quantities, many times in the day. Some of the foods which will help to build her immunity are fresh fruits and juices, and plenty of fresh vegetables. You must include lots of green leafy vegetables. You can either boil the vegetables, combine them with cereals or prepare soups from them.
Zinc is an important mineral for building immunity. Zinc fortified cereals may help. Beans are also a good source of zinc.
You should also ensure that you feed her good quality protein foods like, milk, boiled eggs, boiled and shredded chicken/ soups.
There are some very good suggestions for foods and tips on feeding in the above article.
You could also request your child’s paediatrician to suggest a good multi vitamin to boost her immunity.

faiza plz can u tell me what should give to my baby he is 9 month plz tel me is eat banana but he had gass problem plz help me

21 January, 2012 | Vijayalakshmi Iyengar | Reply

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Faiza, I just want to assure you that mother’s milk is the most nutritious during the baby’s 1st year of life. After 6 months we can introduce solids but it depends on what suits your child best as it is a supplement to mother’s milk. When you introduce new foods to the baby introduce a little at a time to see how s/he tolerate it and then increase the amount gradually. Also any new food you want to introduce should be done after 10-15 days of the previous new food that you introduced to the baby to see how they accept the new food.
Normally, children having a lot of gas after they eat certain foods are quite common. Even in adults during digestion of foods, intestinal gases like hydrogen, carbon dioxide, in some people methane and traces of hydrogen sulphide are formed and these are responsible for the odour. It is different for different people depending on their sensitivity.
With regard to banana it is highly nutritious but also has high levels of carbohydrate (fructose sugar) and dietary fibre and both may be difficult for the digestive system to handle causing an increase in gas in the stomach. If the amount of banana is too much for the baby (as it is has a lot of fructose) and more than the baby can rapidly digest, the remainder often ferments in the large intestine. This fermentation causes a gas build up in the large intestine that forces gas into the stomach. Similarly many foods cause gas during their digestion as a by product by naturally occurring bacteria in the large intestine, or colon and it may cause discomfort when it accumulates in excess.
So we suggest you wait a little longer till your baby is a year old and then give fresh fruits. If you want you can give slightly cooked apples and the baby may tolerate it well.

04 October, 2011 | Vijayalakshmi Iyengar | Reply

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Mr Arora, As Ms Mrinal has clearly explained we do not advocate any medical treatment as we are not medical practitioners. Fever due to any reason requires medical attention first as otherwise it can lead to many complications. We as dietitians offer diet solutions such as what to feed the patients with fever, to combat weakness and dehydration on one hand and nurture the patient back to normal health as they overcome fever on the other.
Unfortunately we repeatedly get questions on what to do with a child`s fever. So our suggestion has always been `get a doctor to attend to the fever first‘and subsequently take our suggestions for diet. As a matter of fact if any one intently reads the article above, it has exhaustive information on what to feed anybody with fever or when they are recovering from one. Sometimes it pains us /worries us when patients constantly ask us for suggestions on how to deal with their child`s or spouse`s fever instead of going to their primary physician.

Mrinal Dear L.C. Arora,
Thank you for your comments - but perhaps you are not aware that with children the first line of treatment is getting the viral fever under control and the temperature down. Quite often we have had queries from parents who have a child suffering with high fever and they haven't made the effort to contact a pediatrician. A high fever is not just a symptom of fever it could be an indication of a more severe underlying condition. During the initial phases of a high fever that seems to spike - the first thing to do is bring the fever under control and find out what the cause in.
In the meanwhile the child must be kept as hydrated as possible with light juices, and plenty of water.
NutritionVista is a nutritional, preventive care company and nowhere do we claim to be a doctors practice.

Most parents who write to us about their childs fever - we reply to them in private as well and suggest that once the fever is under control - they call us back and then we work on the nutritional status of the child.
In most cases the parents do call our dietitians back for follow up advice.

The first thing that you need to do is immediately consult a doctor for your husband. Fever is often caused by some infection and he may need a few tests to diagnose the exact reason. The diet will depend upon the diagnosis but till then he must consume plenty of fluids and his food should be light, non oily and non spicy. He can consume milk, fruits, vegetables, cereals like rice, toast, thin dals, and stewed or boiled non veg foods if he is a non vegetarian.

A very good tip - once she is better and as she grows older help her build good habits of being very active outdoors with play and sports.

14 April, 2011 | Sangeetha Narayana Swamy | Reply

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy Parents,

If your child has high fever (temperature beyond 100), the 1st priority is to get the temperature under control so please contact your pediatrician immediately. .

When the child is not well he/she will not be inclined to eat anything even their regular food. What is vital is to provide sufficient fluids to the child and keep the body hydrated. If your child refuses to consume any food/fluids, it might require that the energy and fluids is provided through IV (intravenous) which requires admission in the hospital.

Once the child is better and his fever is under control, you can consult with the dietitian for a balanced and nutritious diet.

13 April, 2011 | Vijayalakshmi Iyengar | Reply

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Mr Enumularaju,
Yes, high fever can cause convulsions, a lot like epilepsy (fits). So at the outset I request you to ensure that whenever your son gets fever kindly take him to a pediatrician immediately. You on your part should monitor his fever regularly. Its vital that the fever is kept low by administration of paracetamol syrup as by the instructions given on the bottle (in consultation with the childs doctor of course) and you put wet packs on his forehead and bring the fever down regularly. He also requires plenty of water and electrolytes(hydration) you might have to force feed the electral solution if need be , or admit him to the hospital if you cannot manage to prevent complications.
You have to be careful when you are dealing with children and any illness what so ever and not take anything for granted.
I also hope you have a regular pediatrician you consult as he/she will know his complete case history and not waste time discussing it should there be an emergency.

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy Dear Mr.Gandhi,

All children tend to get fever and loose stools after a vaccination, your pediatrician should have told you about it. But if the fever and diarrhea continues after 48 hours you have to consult him immediately. Keep the child hydrated with water and electrolytes. Also give him the medicine to control fever, this should be need based.

28 March, 2011 | Vijayalakshmi Iyengar | Reply

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Mr. Gandhi, Normally there is no need to worry as a vaccine, like any medicine, is capable of causing common adverse reactions like fever, diarrhea rash etc However it is advisable to consult your pediatrician or GP so that you can monitor the child and give timely medical help . Nevertheless ensure that the child is hydrated well, with water, fresh fruit juice, electrolyte solution, thin buttermilk, tender coconut water etc and the fever is managed (kept under control) so that there are no secondary complications. Should the symptoms exceed more than a day or day and a half, we suggest that you contact the doctor and apprise him/her of the same immediately.
All the best and wish the child a speedy recovery.

Mrinal Jhangiani Dear Mr. Gandhi,
I do hope you have contacted your baby's pediatrician and informed him of these symptoms. If not please do so immediately.

Before we can recommend any dietary suggestions we do recommend you have your baby evaluated at the earliest - diarrhea, vomiting and fever are serious symptoms and you must get a proper diagnosis from the pediatrician before taking any further action.
Most important is to keep the fever down, not let it spike and prevent the baby from getting dehydrated by giving electrolytes.

Our dietitians will recommend some dietary suggestions once the pediatrician has given his suggestions.
Good luck.

Try to give lots of vegetables and fruits to your child. Foods rich in Vitamin C like gooseberries, orange, sweet lime, lemon can help to boost your son's immunity. Almonds are rich sources of vitamin E which is very good antioxidant and will increase resistance to fight diseases.
Please review with your pediatrician for any other health concern.

Mrinal Jhangiani Dear Mr. Sindu,
I do hope you have contacted your sons pediatrician and informed him of these symptoms. Any immune disorder or long term low grade fever must be thoroughly checked out. One question you may want to also find out is whether he has any food allergies.

Once the doc has reviewed him you can focus on nutrition. Regarding his diet that will help boost his immunity and reduce how often he gets colds - the most important advice we can offer is that he eat a well nourished diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, good protein like eggs and fish if he is a non-vegetarian and lots of lentils and beans if he is a vegetarian. Whole milk and dairy products should also be a part of his daily diet.
Our dietitians will give further details on what foods will keep him healthier.
Good luck.

18 January, 2011 | Vijayalakshmi Iyengar | Reply

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Dear Jessica,
• Gruel is a thin porridge, made by cooking a little cereal like oats, rye, roasted rice, semolina, wheat flour etc, in milk or water. It is either sweet or salty and is easy to digest.
• Glucose water is mainly given to people who are too sick and do not have the energy to eat food. It is given as an emergency measure to instantly replenish water (to prevent dehydration) and glucose (to provide energy).
• It's perfectly alright to drink milk when you have a fever as long as you do not have nausea or vomiting. However milk like food, takes a little while to digest. Since a person with fever needs lots of fluids, it may be better to drink clear fluids rather than fill the stomach with milk

Since your child is suffering from 102 fever I assume/hope that she is under the care of her primary physician or paediatrician. She probably will be on paracetamol to bring down fever. On your end work on reducing her fever with wet packs and giving her as much fluids -fruits juice, glucose plain water anything that she can take in. Continue this despite her vomiting, to prevent dehydration. If fever does not let up, inform the doctor without delay as she may get convulsions. Once fever goes down you can give foods as we have suggested in our article.
