Lately, she had been careless with her eating, had not worked out as often as she would have liked to; but hey, she was young and active. Where the heck did these inches come from?

Two weeks would be here in a flash, and two quick months later the wedding would soon follow. She called up her best friend Sonali, who told her to go on an extreme diet of fruit one day and vegetables the next, for two weeks straight. Her sister Jasmine told her to take the same Fat-Buster pills she regularly took to lose weight before special events. She could shed nearly 10 kg in two weeks, perfect for the engagement party.

She knew stress, overeating, no exercise and lack of sleep had done her in. How on Earth would she look slim, radiant, and glowing if she went on an extreme diet or ate those awful diet pills? But then again, her engagement was a once in a lifetime event.

Do you find yourself in Corinne's boat; on the wrong side of unexpected weight gain?
Here are a few suggestions for you whether you are a man or a woman. The first three are compulsory and the others you need to embrace wholeheartedly to not just lose weight in two weeks, but use this as a jump start effort to look great from this day forward, for better or worse, till death do you part.
  1. Watch and cut back on portion sizes. Eat 5-6 small low calorie meals, but ensure they are balanced nutritionally. NEVER take seconds, and drink plenty of water.
  2. Exercise 45-60 minutes every day. Move, dance, skip, take the stairs, just keep moving.
  3. Eat a good and light breakfast EVERY day and never skip a meal. Carry a fruit, 6-8 nuts with freshly cut veggies to chomp on. No cold coffees, fruit milk shakes and juices.
  4. Lunches must include small salads with no oil. Have lemon juice dressings, low fat yogurts, dal and chappati or grilled meats at every meal. No spicy curries, heavy biryanis, restaurant soups, breads and definitely no desserts.
  5. Keep only healthy snacks at home. Good examples are fruits and sliced vegetables such as carrots and cucumbers. Try bean salads, bhuna chana, raisins with a couple of almonds, sprouted lentils, a  small cup of skimmed milk or fat free yogurt. No namkeens, (fried, junky snacks) cream biscuits, pakoras, samosas, or kebabs, etc.
  6. Ask you fiancé for help. Eat in rather than eating out. The chances of over eating or eating unhealthy, fatty foods are higher when you eat out. Go dancing after dinner and let those calories burn off, sweat out the fat and feel aglow with the flowing endorphins.
  7. Avoid all alcohol, this is where those calories creep in. A rum and coke here, and a lite beer there add up fast, so drink water instead. It hydrates you without the additional calories. Add a slice of lemon to the water to make it interesting. Alcohol adds 100-150 calories easily per serving. Ditto for sodas, juices and cocktails.
  8. Skip off prepared desserts. Instead enjoy ripe fruits with dripping juices for they can be luscious when shared with your partner.
  9. Get a good nights rest. Your body rejuvenates itself as you sleep like a baby. Lack of sleep increases stress and decreases your ability to discriminate - perfect scenarios for emotional overeating. Get adequate rest and if you find yourself in an emotional and stressful situation with your family or work (which you and I both know will happen), get onto a phone and talk it over with friends, instead of turning to food for comfort.
  10. Remind yourself, you are worth every calorie and every inch dropped.

Dropping a dress size means different things to different people. Some may need to lose 2-4 kg while others 6-7 kg before they see a difference. But usually, inches decrease before weight does.

Eating 500 fewer calories a day and exercising to burn another 350-400 calories a day should sensibly work out to not only losing 2.5 kg in two weeks but also losing some unnecessary flab and bulk.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Many people who work out feel they have hit a road block as they do not seem to be losing much weight after a couple of weeks of exercise.
Remember exercise also works on strengthening the muscles which means muscles now hold more water and get toned..which is healthy. So the loss of weight due to `fat loss' may be made up by `water held' by muscles. However because of exercise you will see a kind of body sculpting and appear thinner and also more healthy which is what is required. EXERCISE regularly and be healthy and have well toned body -dont worry too much about the weight.

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy Dear Priyanka,

Apart from eating small and frequent meals in a day, including fresh veggies and fruits, whole foods instead of processed or refined ones, avoiding foods high in fat you should also follow an specific exercise regimen to achieve the desired body weight.

In order to tone your legs, flatten your stomach and shrink your hips to a normal size you need to follow a work out that involves high knee drill, squat jumps, boxing, lateral lunge, hamstring curl, plank and side plank.

We suggest you enroll for a 6 month weight reduction and management program with nutritionvista and also consult a fitness expert who will guide you to practice the right kind of exercises targeting the specific parts of the body.

Thank you for your query,

Regards,
