This brings attention to the fact that breastfeeding for the first six months of life is the first and best form of immunization for infants. Its universal coverage can save 13-15% of all under-five child deaths. If women begin breastfeeding within one hour of birth, it can save 22% of newborn deaths. (NFHS-3)
As you protect your baby in your womb from all infection, your first milk known as colostrum will also provide resistance to various diseases and infections. Your milk is made especially for your own baby and can be its complete nutrition. You can nurse your baby even when you are ill. Mothers, can feed their newborns exclusively with their milk until their infants are six months of age and may even continue it till two years of age.
Breast milk is best for your baby as it provides multiple benefits:
•    It has balanced nutrition for your baby as it contains the right amount of protein, easy fats, and lactose with vitamins, iron, minerals, adequate water and enzymes that have immuno-globulins necessary for your baby.
•    It is also sterile, warm and needs no preparation.
•    It is easily digestible by your child.
•    It is economical and free from contamination.
•    It enhances the emotional bonding between you and your baby and provides him a feeling of security.
Benefits to the mother:
•    It reduces post-delivery bleeding and chances of anemia.
•    It act as natural contraceptive
•    It has a protective effect against breast and ovarian cancers.
•    Nursing uses up extra calories, making it easier to lose the pounds gained during pregnancy
Note of Caution: There are instances where breastfeeding may not be possible. In cases of milk allergy, or if the child needs greater amounts of nutrients due to anemia or some other deficiency, or if the mother is unable to produce enough milk for the infant. Thereby formula that has been fortified must be provided.

Kanika Jain A new study suggests that mothers who consume a diet high in trans fats double the likelihood that their infants will have high levels of body fat. According to a study published in online edition of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was found that infants whose mothers consumed more than 4.5 grams of trans fats per day while breastfeeding were twice as likely to have high percentages of body fat, or adiposity, than infants whose mothers consumed less than 4.5 grams per day of trans fats.

It was also found that mothers who consumed more than 4.5 grams of trans fats per day increased their own risk of excessive fat accumulation, independent of pre-pregnancy weight, by almost six times.

Kanika Jain In a recent study published in American Journal of Medicine it was reported that mothers who did not breastfeed their children have significantly higher rates of type 2 diabetes later in life than moms who breastfed. Differences were notable even after considering other factors like age, race, physical activity and tobacco and alcohol use.
This gives another good reason to encourage women to breastfeed their infants.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Hello Mr Ruiz
I completely agree with Kanika that it is very important for new mothers to nurse the infant as soon as s/he is born with the first secretion which is thick yellowish colostrum. As she has rightly said it is a store house of nutrition which has vital nutrients for the baby. That apart it also has the required antibodies for giving the infant life long immunity for a host of infections and will provide vital protection from many illnesses. The very many positive attributes that both colostrum and breast milk provide, endorsed by WHO and a number of Organisations dealing with health and is very clearly listed in the article is well worth taking extra trouble even if a mother has certain challenges including being overweight. In fact it is a proven fact that a mother would lose weight if she breast feeds. At the most she may need to adopt the right posture to hold the infant.
Thank you

Kanika Hi Ruiz,
I agree that not only breast milk a complete nutrient storehouse for newborns, but it also help in building bond between mother and child.
I would like to add few things regarding breast feeding. Ideally, the baby should receive the first breastfeed as soon as possible(preferably within one hour of birth).Colostrum, the thick yellowish liquid secreted from mother's breast for first 2-3 days after child birth is highly nutritious and rich in antibodies that protect infant from gastrointestinal and other infectious diseases. However, studies have shown that some mothers and family members, due to ignorance, consider this first milk as something dirty and indigestible and discard it.Instead, they feed child with pre-lacteal feeds like glucose water, honey, animal milk which may be potentially harmful and may cause diarrhoea in new born. So, we should educate and encourage all expecting ladies and new mothers not to discard colostrum at any cost and feed it to their new borns.

Mr. Ruiz - Box 24 Totally agree that breasfeeding is very best for babies. It not just get the natural vitamins and minerals necessary for babies it also has an emotional effect. A connection between the mother and the child starts to build and special feelings for each other is being molded. Breast feeding for some mothers that are overweight can be challenging.
