Please Pass Me the Salt, Pepper & Statin Shakers!
Coming soon to a dinner table near you - A three in one spice shaker set – a salt shaker, a pepper shaker and a statin shaker

Wouldn't it be amazing if we could eat triglyceride and cholesterol laden meals to our hearts content, so long as we garnished them with a sprinkling of statin powder.

Well! Snap out of it!

Even though new medications and concoctions are being discovered to counter the effects of eating a fat filled diet, it still doesnʼt mean you donʼt have a responsibility to feeding your body the right kind of nutrition. After all fats are not the only element your body needs to live a healthy life.

Recently, to counter unhealthy eating practices and work with the ideology -`If you can't beat them, join them’ some British cardiologists came out with a drastic solution. They suggested that fast food chains such as McDonalds add in a statin as an ingredient along with their dishes similar to their offer of salt, sugar, ketchup, and mayonnaise, as published in the American Journal of Cardiology (August 2010 issue). The authors suggest that the customers can sprinkle statins on to their milkshakes or super sized fries to counter balance the pile of junk food they eat. This strategy according to them is not to support unhealthy eating practises but as the ` the McStatin—slogan goes: "I'm neutralizing it!" is said to be their 2nd option where as the 1st option continues to be life style modifications –healthy eating, regular exercise and to stop smoking. Only the size of the statin tablet Vs amount of Junk food has to be calculated.

The cardiologists found that people don’t wince when they take unlimited sachets or liberally use the shakers for condiments and spices leading to health challenges but immediately react when a potentially protective drug is given as an additive.

Radha Is there a regulatory body that does regular checks on these outlets to see if they are using fresh oils for cooking the fries and patties especially in a country like India. Also i do not see them mentioning the calorie for each of the product they prepare. Isn't it mandatory to do so?

Poonam Vaswani Hello Radha,
You've raised a very valid point here. The food inspectors of the FDA are responsible for picking up samples from food vendors for qualty checking. As far as nutritional labelling is concerned,it is mandatory only for packaged foods to provide the nutritional details.

Sripriya Ravi Where do we stop? Next we would have anti-obesity drugs on the table and probably even an on call gastroplasty done?

Vijayalakshmi Hi Sripriya, I agree with you that there seems to be no stopping some people. I guess there is a disconnect while eating. Well we believe that if we keep writing more and more, baring the health problems time and again, some where it will help some one. Would you agree?
Be with us and help project problems due to unhealthy choices ,we will make dents for the better.

Vijayalakshmi Hi Anjali, very nicely put. Very likely we will resort to such measures if we continue indulging with abandon. On one hand I want to laugh out loud as it seems like a good joke but on the other I wince with fear. What a paradox!!

Vijayalakshmi I guess when people do not make wise choices doctors have to find alternatives to keep them healthy. There are more people who regret and less who take precautions .Ironical!

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy I feel instead of providing the statin shaker for the calorie, fat and sugar dense foods, people should practice the holistic approach of eating better, good physical activity and meditation that would help them to not only reduce their weight, lipid and glucose levels but also have a healthy mind. This approach would allow the person to indulge in an occasional treat of fries, burger or a milk shake.
