According to Daniel Carpenter, a government professor at Harvard who is an expert on the drug agency, What is of concern today is that the drugs prescribed for chronic health problems, are suddenly showing up to be causing problems on continual use. Even drug companies have had a shift in thinking. They see a market of ageing people with chronic diseases. As most of the chronic diseases are due to life style problems, the focus has shifted to big markets for drugs as they needed be taken by a large part of the population lifelong, a long haul for every drug. On the flip side all drug benefits and side effects noted are based on short-term studies, and thus may turn out to be erroneous on prolonged use The ethical committees for drug use are now getting worried as drugs proven beneficial for short term use are now proving to be challenging when used for chronic, long term problems and who can be faulted for that?
In this context an expert on Osteoporosis -Dr Ethel Siris who believes that after extended studies she sees bisphosphonates as an excellent solution for preventing fractures in osteoporotic people. She is concerned that people will unfortunately weigh the extreme rare conditions of thigh fractures and jaw disease against the benefits it offers. How does one react to the turn of events?
Finally what rankles in ones mind is the irony of it all! “Of drugs causing what they were supposed to prevent”
