This study complements with the previous study undertaken by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs which found similarly higher risk of chronic nonalcoholic liver disease among veterans with diabetes who had been admitted to hospital.
So does that mean that diabetics should be screened for liver complications too? Say study authors "Although diabetic hepatopathy is potentially less common, it may be appropriate for addition to the list of target-organ conditions related to diabetes, such as glomerulopathy, retinopathy and neuropathy". They add, "Annual screening for liver disease might be accomplished by means of a simple biochemical analyte such as alanine aminotransferase." However, authors also propose that the effects of weight loss and glycemic and lipid control should be better understood before instituting annual screening for liver disease
