Exercise and Binge- a wasted effort: An hour of brisk walk expends barely 250 calories and then if you binge on a burger of 350calories, your exercise effort is wasted. You tend to add on 100 calories that readily convert to body fat. Consume fewer calories than what you burn, to lose weight. Track energy intake and expenditure with calorie counters frequently.
Exercise, hormones and appetite- Exercise alters energy balance of the body. Even small changes in energy balance can produce rapid changes in the hormones associated with appetite, specifically acylated ghrelin that induces hunger and leptin that reduces it. Intense exercise lowers ghrelin and suppresses appetite. However, emerging research indicates diverse responses. Appetite is markedly reduced in men after workout, while women experience hunger pangs. The reason is female body strives to hold on to every ounce of fat to maintain energy stores for reproduction.
Similarly, obese persons are likely to binge after workouts. In fact, high body fat content in obese raise leptin levels and is supposed to put off hunger. But with increased adiposity, the body becomes resistant to actions of hormone leptin.
