Studies have demonstrated that phytoestrogens present in soy slow down the male hormones that increase risk of prostate cancer, and result in a better hormonal balance, thus offering protection from prostate cancer.

On the other hand, a strong link has been found between soy consumption and a decrease in sperm counts.

Animal studies have shown that moderate levels of phytoestrogens given during youth or adulthood affect the quality of their erections substantially. Scientists need to confirm whether these results can be extrapolated to humans.

Vijayalakshmi The scientific journal Hormones and Behavior (May 2004 ) carried a report that researchers* found male monkeys, on a long-term consumption of isoflavones rich soy diet showed marked influences on patterns of aggression and social behavior. This was not seen in female monkeys. The finding is that a) It is gender biased influence and (b) till date only effects on CVD and post menopausal behavior was studied this is the 1st instance of study neurobehavioral effects. Their question was could it be a prototype or would we find a parallel in human men? Any takers?

Poonam Vaswani Hello Richa,
Several studies have been conducted to find out the effect of soy consumption on male sex hormone. Many of these studies have been conducted on animals. The studies conducted on humans which showed a negative impact on testosterone levels had participants consuming very large amounts of soy- even upto 4 times the amount eaten normally.
Right now, it seems that a moderate consumption of soy should be safe for males of all age groups.

Richa Sharma Ms Poonam, I have been avoiding giving soy or soya as we call it in India, to my son as I heard that if men or boys soya they develop some female characteristics due to its estrogenic activity. Can you tell me if it is true?

Meenakshi Can you tell me how much of soy should I include in my son's (11 years old) diet for him to get the benefits and are there any limitations on its consumption per day or per week? or is it best avoided?

Poonam Vaswani Hello Ms Meenakshi
It will be absolutely safe for your son to have moderate amounts of soy everyday. About 1 serving per day would be just fine. That means he can have about 1/4th cup of solid soy or 4 oz of soy milk per day.
