Can Yoga Help With The Digestive System -Effect of yoga on digestive health – constipation.YOGA FOR THE DIGESTVE SYSTEM
Can yoga help with digestion and digestive disorders?

Yoga is an ancient discipline that aims to bring balance between body and mind. It involves exercises or poses (asanas), breathing (pranayama), meditation (dhyana) and sound vibrations (mantra chanting).

While most common digestive diseases are not life threatening, they can cause a lot of distress to the person, especially if they tend to occur frequently. They can also be the root cause of other health problems.

Common digestive problems include constipation, diarrhea, bloating/gas, heartburn, GERD, indigestion, colitis, Irritable bowel syndrome etc. Digestive problems are usually caused by bad diet, sedentary lifestyle, stress and allergy.

Yogasanas improve digestive function and provide relief from gastrointestinal problems by

  • Relaxing a person and in turn the digestive system
  • Improving blood flow and oxygenation to digestive organs
  • Eliminating waste more efficiently
  • Decreasing gas
  • Reducing acid
  • Strengthening digestive muscles

According to Mayo Clinic learning to relax and breathe are important in reducing digestive discomfort and improving digestive health.

Shekar Ramanatha My weight is normal, but I have a small paunch. I have a highly stressed job, my working hours are very erratic, though its a 9 - 7 job. because of this my eating schedule is not proper and so is my digestive system. Can the exercises mentioned above help me and can i do it either in the morning or evening.

Vijayalakshmi Iyengar Mr Shekar Having a normal weight but have a paunch would probably mean that you are not eating very much more than you require but your life is sedentry. You have to walk briskly or go to the Gym and focus on bending exercises that work to move the excess collection of fat round your middle. Please ensure that your exercise is at a 40 mt stretch preferably 2 times a day.
Yes these exercises will positively help you in any which ways.
PS Do you take beer regularly, for many people may not be obese but develop a beer paunch.

Manjula Shekhar, Its best top start with 30 minutes morning and evening. If lack of time then go for 30 minutes in morning. On days you come home very stressed specially make the effort to do the exercises for 30 minutes in the evening. Good luck friend!

Nadia Akter Hello, I am Nadia. I am about 21. I am getting fattier day by day.... Can YOGA help me for losing weight? Which type of food habit is appropriate for me?

12 May, 2011 | Mrinal | Reply

Mrinal Hello Nadia,
While it is upsetting to be gaining steady weight - there are a few simple steps you can take to start curbing the weight gain.
1. Are you exercising 45 -60 minutes a day - if not start with thrice a week and increase gradually.
2. Whatever you normally eat - take 1/3 less at each meal.
Is it hormonal - have you had yourself checked recently?
If you need further long term guidance and a dietitian to work with you through a few months of weight loss and lifestyle modification, then contact our team for personalized care and package. Good luck!

Poonam Dear Nadia,
Traditional yoga can help in losing weight, but the process maybe a little slow. Correct eating will certainly help, but your diet will need to be personalised according to your needs. Our dietitians can help you.

Anjalie M I have always been constipated since childhood - nothing seems to work - I eat a high fiber diet and do drink a lot of water. Would any yoga help - or only some types. Will give it a try. The only thing that used to help was yogurt, but I have stopped that of late as I have developed some milk allergies!

06 May, 2011 | Poonam | Reply

Poonam Dear Anjalie,
Yes, yoga can help with relieving constipation, but you will have to practice it very regularly. Some of the effective asanas are, suryanamaskar, pawanmuktasana, bhujangasana, vajrasana, dhanurasana, sarvangasana, halasana, ardh matsyendrasana.
As far as your allergy goes, usually people are allergic to the lactose in milk, but because this lactose gets converted to lactic acid in yogurt, it is normally tolerated well.

Anjalie Thanks for getting back to me - my mother also read up about the yogurt - I am going to try having smaller quantity at different time of the day to see how I am reacting. Will start with basic yoga asanas - and keep you posted.
