Health benefits of yogurt (Live Active Culture)
The medical community's opinion on the health benefits of consuming yogurt was elucidated in a survey conducted by The National Yogurt Association. The Live Active Culture Yogurt Survey polled 565 physicians to assess their beliefs on the health benefits associated with regular yogurt consumption. The survey found that two out of three doctors who counsel the patients on nutritional issues recommend LAC yogurt for (a) its overall nutritional health benefits, (b) finding it helpful in maintaining a healthy intestinal system and (c) as a tolerable source of dairy calcium for those who are lactose intolerant.
- It supports gastrointestinal health – the components of yogurt formed by the lactic acid bacteria present in it, alleviates constipation and diarrhea. It also prevents inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer and infection by peptic ulcer caused by the bacteria H. pylori, which can lead to stomach cancer.
- The pro-biotic strains of bacteria present in yogurt improves the immune system and shrinks the occurrence of infections, inflammatory diseases and allergies according to a study published in American journal or clinical nutrition.
- Regular intake of diary products has shown to lower hypertension (A study from the department of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health). Due to the fat content excess consumption is not advised for heart patients, but low fat versions of yogurt and products also have the same benefits as the regular version.
- Studies show a slump in the serum LDL cholesterol levels on regular consumption of yogurt.
- A daily use of yogurt reduces the pH of the vaginal tract and prevents Candida infections.
- Yogurt is the natural cure for bad breath and is found to reduce halitosis by 80%. Daily consumption also reduces plaque and gingivitis.
- Yogurt when used topically on the skin has proved to cure acne and skin rashes. It offers a healthful glow by diminishing dark circles and closing pores. It is helpful for hair and cures itchy scalp and dandruff.
