The Study
14 healthy individuals took part in the study. Each participant was given either 500 ml beetroot juice or 500 ml of plain water.
Blood pressure was measured before drinking the juice and at defined intervals after drinking it till 24 hours. Researchers also measured the nitrite and nitrate concentrations in blood, before and during the study.
In the second part of the study it was seen whether it was necessary for participants to swallow their saliva for the beneficial effects on blood pressure and change in nitrate and nitrite levels.
