Mixed results of research studies
- A study on the role of coconut and coconut oil in coronary heart disease in Kerala, South India was unable to find a link between coconut oil consumption and prevalence of CHD.
- The study on the effects of dietary coconut oil on the biochemical and anthropometric profiles of women presenting abdominal obesity revealed that dietary supplementation with coconut oil did not cause dyslipidemia and in fact seemed to promote a reduction in abdominal obesity.
- Another study found that oils with MCT can be incorporated into a weight loss program without the fear of adversely affecting metabolic risk factors.
- An earlier study that appeared in the August 24, 2007 issue of the European Journal of Physiology and conducted by researchers at Sao Paulo Federal University studied the effects of coconut oil, soybean oil, fish oil and lard on the development of type 2 diabetes in rats. It was seen that rats fed diets enriched with coconut oil or soybean oil had reduced levels of a protein that protects the body against diabetes and thus promotes insulin resistance.
- A Tufts University study published in the March 2010 issue of Metabolism, which compared the effects of cholesterol-lowering drugs in hamsters that were fed diets rich in either olive oil, safflower oil or coconut oil found that hamsters fed coconut oil had higher levels of non-HDL cholesterol in their blood than those fed olive oil or safflower oil.
Since results are mixed, it appears that a lot more longterm research involving larger number of humans from different ethnic groups is needed to give a final verdict on the matter.
