RDA for Vitamin D & Calcium - New recommendations being debated
How much do we really need - Critical discussions are a must to ensure clarity for the consumer. (Current Vitamin D. RDA 200 IU/ day being raised to 600 IU/ day)
Vitamin D's role in bone formation is well known, as well as its importance in preventing several chronic lifestyle diseases, namely - heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer and some autoimmune diseases. Thus, determining what are adequate levels for individuals is key.
Over the years research has indicated that Vitamin D plays a vital role in preventing these chronic diseases so doctors have gradually been increasing the dosage( 1000-2000 IU/day )they recommend to their patients.
