Riboflavin also known as Vitamin B2
  • As an antioxidant: During most biochemical reactions oxygen is released. Oxygen, vital for energy production and metabolism in general, is very harmful and reactive if found as a free radical. It damages cells and DNA, cell membranes, blood vessel linings, and joint tissue, may contribute to the aging process and also the development of a number of health conditions, such as heart disease and cancer etc., in the body. Glutathione is a small, protein-like molecule that complexes with free oxygen and is responsible for helping prevent this oxygen-based damage. Riboflavin as a cofactor works with Glutathione to prevent free radical damage.
  • Cardio protective mechanism: Riboflavin acts as an important cofactor for an enzyme (MTHFR) catabolism of homocysteine (high levels of homocysteine have been found to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease.) People with low levels of Riboflavin tend to have high levels of homocysteine
  • Riboflavin acts as a co factor in converting both vitamin B6 and folate into active forms in the body.
  • Important for body growth and red blood cell production
  • In maintaining the levels of other B vitamins

supriya Tule I get a sore throat very often and always would attribute it to infection, could it be Riboflavin Deficiency? I eat pretty much everything so what foods should I focus on in that case?

Sangeetha Narayana Swamy Hello Supriya,

Severe Riboflavin deficiency will lead to sore throat. You will also have other symptoms like mouth and lip sores, swelling of the mucous membranes.

As mentioned in the article its the most widely available vitamin, but care should be taken so that you do not lose it during storage and cooking. All the good sources are mentioned in the article (page 4).

Thank you for your query,

Regards,
Sangeetha Narayana Swamy,
