Deficiency:-
Normally Riboflavin deficiency is not easily recognized as it is mistaken for reaction to dryness of skin. It leads to sore throats, cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth called angular stomatitis, inflammation of mouth and peeling lips called Cheilosis, magenta colored and swollen tongue called Glossitis, edema & eye disorders. As the condition gets worse it leads to skin lesions / seborrhea dermatitis, loss of hair, sensitivity to light, poor digestion, retarded growth and gradually slower mental responses. Sometimes it also shows up as burning feet syndrome
Riboflavin and Drug/Nutrient Interactions/ Health conditions
Drugs: Alcohol, medications like antibiotic Tetracycline, antidepressant drugs, anti malarial drugs and certain anti-gout drugs, etc., have shown to decrease Riboflavin availability in the body and may need supplementation
Other Nutrients: The level of Thiamin (Vitamin B1) strongly affects the absorption of B2, and in turn adequate levels of Riboflavin influence the levels of many major nutrients such as iron, zinc, folate, vitamin B3 and vitamin B12.
Many theories that Riboflavin is useful in the treatment of acne, anemia, muscle cramps and migraine headaches have not been proven.
