Here are a few tips on how to prevent breast cancer:
- Be aware of a family history of serious illnesses like cancer.
- Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active.
- Choose whole grains such as whole-wheat flour, lentils, beans and whole grain oats as part of your diet.
- Eat at least five to nine servings a day of fruit and vegetables containing phyto-nutrients that protect the body against cancer.
- Limit your intake of processed and red meat.
- Avoid smoking and limit your consumption of alcohol.
- Perform regular breast self-examinations and opt for regular mammograms, especially if you are at a higher risk of developing the disease.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
"There is no need for women to worry," says Kamala. "Just remain aware that these things do happen." Adds her sister Sunita, "Be inquisitive when it comes to your health and take necessary steps, so that you can look forward to a full life as a daughter and sister and someday as a wife and mother. I have."
